Applicants can walk into their local DPS office and take the learner permit test, or driver theory test, without any prerequisites. While you might be tempted to just walk into the driver license office without any preparation, it’s a good idea to study beforehand. The official test is composed of 30 multiple-choice questions based on the Alabama Driver’s Handbook, so unless you want to read that (no thank you), we recommend taking Aceable’s free permit prep test course to study for the exam instead.

Drivers ed is not a requirement for those seeking their learner license or provisional license in the state of Arizona. Instead, applicants can take the written knowledge test at any point after they turn 15. In order to pass the Arizona learner permit test, you’ll have to get at least 24 out of 30 multiple choice questions correct. California

California, you're not dreamin': Aceable is now offering its permit test prep course for free!

California residents under age 18 are required to take a driver education course in order to get a learner’s permit. Georgia

In Georgia, you can get your learner’s permit without having to take any driving courses. All you have to do to get your instruction permit is head to your local Department of Driver Services Center and pass both the vision test and written knowledge test. The written knowledge test contains 40 multiple-choice questions and you must get 75 percent correct in order to pass. Indiana

When can you get your learner license in Indiana? Depends on whether you want to take a drivers education course or not. If you decide to take an Indiana BMV-approved course, you can get your learner’s permit at age 15, instead of age 16, and get your probationary license up to six months earlier. If you don’t want to take a driving course, you’re eligible once you turn 16 to head to your local BMV branch and take both the driver theory exam and vision test. Drivers education is not required in Pennsylvania, but taking it can help you ditch your restricted license sooner and move onto a full license.
